Berlo Focused On Key Area, JIg A Major Factor

Thursday, June 19, 2008

Shayne Berlo fished an All-American at Hamilton in 2004, and relied on that experience this time around.

There was a time when the All-American was second only to the Bassmaster Classic in terms of importance. That was back when Red-Man sponsored Operation Bass. Nowadays, several other big-money championships might seem to diminish the All-American's stature.

But the fact remains: The BFL All-American is the biggest, best, and most prestigious event in the country for the heart and soul of the sport – the country's weekend anglers.

This year, the event didn't disappoint. It took place at the notoriously stingy Lake Hamilton, Ark. during the last week of May, and in a razor-tight finish, Shayne Berlo of Vienna, Va. edged Kentucky competitor Kevin Snider by a 3-ounce margin. And the Top 5 were separated by just 7 ounces.

For the win, Berlo pocketed $100,000 cash, plus a pro berth in the upcoming Forrest Wood Cup and a spot on the 2009 FLW Tour.

"It was incredible," he said. "Up until the time Kim Carver reached in his bag and came up with nothing, I thought I'd finished 2nd. It never even occurred to me that I'd be 1st. I was sure he had a limit, and probably a big fish. He had a good poker face in the weigh-in line.

"This is what I'm fishing the BFLs for – to win the All-American," he added. "To achieve that goal seems amazing now that I've done it. I've been fishing the BFLs full-time for 7 years now, and I feel blessed for the fact that I actually won one of these things."

Here's how the business-development manager from Vienna, Va. did it.

Practice

Berlo had actually fished an All-American at Hamilton back in 2004 and finished 11th (5 ounces behind the Top 10 cut). That event took place in mid-April, a full month earlier than this year's iteration, but he still had the history of that event to draw from. And he used it when he arrived for his brief pre-practice prior to the cutoff.

The fish were post-spawn during his pre-practice, with big females suspending under boat docks, and makes guarding fry.

"Back in 2004, I was in 1st place after the first day with 12-01," he said. "I caught my fish in a general area that I'd just driven past and really liked the way it looked. It was a series of main-lake pockets that had isolated boat docks, or a couple of boat docks.

"On the second day (in 2004) I kind of choked – conditions changed and I didn't change very well with the conditions," he added. "But I learned a lot about that part of the lake."

He didn't start his pre-practice there, but eventually checked it out, and when he did, he started to get better bites.

"That pretty much solidified my decision that that was the area I'd focus and concentrate on," he noted. "I'd caught big fish there in 2004, and it seemed like that's where the big fish lived in 2008."

Another key was his research revealed some fish did stay shallow at Hamilton year-round. "So a junk-fisherman such as myself can do really well shallow – especially if focusing on key boat docks and that type of structure."

When official practice began the day before the All-American, he didn't spend much time in his key area, since he'd already decided to focus his efforts there. Instead, he tried to find an alternative area. He didn't find much, but did get a key piece or work done. He spent time waypointing what looked like key docks, and those waypoints, it turned out, would be crucial on day 2.

Drama to the very end!

Berlo jigs his way to BFL All-American win embellished by Carver’s theatrics

By David A. Brown - 31.May.2008

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Kim Carver made his mark on the final weigh-ins of the 25th annual Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League All-American presented by Chevy, and it wasn’t for a victory. It was the way he passed the torch, so to speak, to top boater Shayne Berlo.

One of the endearing tendrils of tournament fishing is the sportsmanship shared among competitors. Carver – a past All-American winner and this event’s top boater for days one and two on Lake Hamilton – capped a truly dramatic weigh-in with the kind of showmanship you just can’t script.

Here’s the scene: Berlo had just squeaked past second-place boater Kevin Snider by 3 ounces, so when cool-hand Carver walks his bag to the scale with a classic poker face, Berlo’s thinking his short time in the hot seat is about to end.

“I really thought he had me,” Berlo said. “I definitely thought he had the tournament wrapped up.”

Carver pulls out three small fish that totaled 3 pounds. He needed only another pound, and Berlo looked like he needed a glass of cold water.

At this point, Carver suggested that Berlo’s 5-year-old daughter Alana join her dad on the stage. That’s when Carver drilled in the drama by joking with tournament host and FLW President and CEO Charlie Evans, who a day earlier stated that Carver would need more on the final day to win than he had just weighed.

“Remember what you told me yesterday?” Carver queried. “You said I’d need more than I caught yesterday. That’s what I went fishing for.”

Well, it turned out that fishing and catching would not coincide this day. Carver reached in his bag, paused and asked: “Do you know what I have to say?”

Evans, Berlo and pretty much everyone in the Summit Arena held their breath until the cagey veteran pulled out an empty hand, which he extended to his competitor and said, “Congratulations!”

Alana seemed preoccupied with the confetti that suddenly filled the air, but someday she’ll hear this story and understand how Carver enhanced her daddy’s victory with one classy performance.

Hailing from Vienna, Va., Berlo caught a final-round limit of 4-11, which gave him a tournament total of 20-12 and earned a $100,000 top prize. He caught his fish on a 1/2 ounce Gold Cheeseburger jig with a Berkley craw trailer of the same color. Berlo helped design the jig for Hunter Creek Bait, so he had plenty of confidence in the bait.

“I really believe in this bait,” Berlo said. “I caught fish on it in practice, on day one of the tournament and day two of the tournament, so I knew I needed that bait in my hand on the last day, no matter what.”

Berlo fished pockets and coves in the midlake area, near the Route 70 Bridge. Targeting docks, willow grass lines and bluff banks, he ended up swimming the jig on day three. Pitching his jig deep under cover and working it out proved highly effective.

When a BassFan sits down and thinks about the new year ahead, his or her dreams might include an appearance in a local or regional championship, or maybe a national championship. New Jersey's Bob Soley did that, did it again, then did it one more time. Check this out. In 2006, he fished the BASS Federation Nation National Championship, the Bassmaster Classic, and the BFL All-American.

How'd he do it? With guts, skill, determination and a lot of road miles. And he did it all while holding down a day job as a plumber.

"It was quite a year, to tell you the truth," he said. "It seemed like every couple of months, I was having a big tournament. It was definitely exciting without a doubt."

He's a guy all BassFans can relate to, and his accomplishments are something all BassFans can aspire to.
